Our initial purpose in creating this program was to provide primary teachers and children with an integrated approach to learning because we believe that young children both think and learn holistically.
Once we started to discuss the integration of subject expectations or learning outcomes, many other beliefs and considerations surfaced. In our effort to create a rich and rewarding program for children we discussed:
- children’s developmental stages
- learning styles
- conditions for learning
- child-centred, relevant activities
- fundamental learning
- spiral learning
- home connections.
During all of our discussions about the children, we repeatedly asked ourselves how we might develop the program so that teachers would not only find it appealing, but also see it as a time and energy saver. We considered the issues of:
- diverse learners
- preparation time
- school and class timetables
- resources
- classroom helpers
- home connections
- ongoing professional support
The more we worked with our ideas and our beliefs, the more apparent it became that we had, either individually or collectively depending upon our background in education, a very strong sense of how each aspect or subject area of a successful program should look. We are sharing our visions with you because they helped us to shape the activities that are a part of MITS.
